Market Potential
for Rail Transport with Axle Loads over 22,5 t

As subsidiary of German Rail (DB AG), DB Netz AG is responsible for the rail infrastructure of DB AG. The most important task of the company is to ensure a safe and reliable railway system.

Longest Network in Europe

DB Netz is service provider for the currently around 300 rail companies that use the over 36,000 km track network. DB Netz is responsible for ensuring non-discriminatory access to the infrastructure. At the same time, its activities include the marketing of customer-oriented track offers, the preparation of time tables as well as maintenance and repair. Other activities include the further development of the rail infrastructure.

Responding to new requirements

The increasing trend to shift heavy and voluminous goods from rail can only be counteracted by optimizing the limiting parameters of rail transport. Besides clearance enlargement and an increase in permitted train length, increasing permitted axle loads would also create an opportunity to increase the competitiveness of rail – especially for heavy transport. Since the payload per piece of equipment used can be increased significantly, this opens up opportunities for rail transport companies to reduce costs.

TransCare‘s recommendations were incorporated into DB Netz’s strategy development.
