The Wanne-Herner Eisenbahn und Hafen GmbH (WHE) is a 100% subsidiary of the City of Herne and offers intermodal freight transportation concepts since 1913. WHE’s business operations include a rail transport company, the operation of a workshop and a hinterland terminal focusing on the handling of trailers. To meet future volumes and customer demands, the transshipment terminal will be expanded and rebuilt until spring 2012.
TransCare’s task was to analyze short- and medium-term potentials in the terminal and rail operations processes. With regard to the terminal, TransCare was also entrusted with the task of supporting WHE in the selection of an IT-supported terminal operating system. For this purpose, a specification was drawn up and various systems were evaluated.
Based on a detailed status quo analysis, TransCare developed an activity-based costing system for rail operations that facilitates cost transparency and the associated reliable decision-making basis for the WHE management. Together with a manufacturer, TransCare developed an expansion concept for modernizing the interlocking technology. With the implementation, substantial cost savings can be achieved.
